Yes, I am doing a second blog on princesses. This will be kind of a modge podge of topics though so bare with me, I just have a lot to say. To start off, when I was in my senior AP English class, we spent a very long time on princesses, our final project was to choose a princess story and present on it! Didn't know why we were doing that in a college class, but I guess it was more important in society than I thought considering this is the second college class talking about princess culture.
One of the things I find very interesting about princess stories is that most of them were adult stories told to adults! The princess stories are very old and I am not assuming anyone thinks that Disney wrote the stories, however just in case there is a misconception, Disney did not write the stories. In fact, some of Disney's versions are drastically different than the originals. But stories do change over time when they are passed through generations without being written down. In many instances, it took over a century for it to become a children's story. The stories have sexual undertones and themes of coming of age. Ariel after all gains legs which allows her to become penetrable. It's been said that these folk tales were the porn of their day. Basically, these stories were for adults. The women would be sitting around doing the spinning, or whatever women did back then. And they'd be bored and they'd tell these stories.
The Grimms Brothers took these stories and took out all the incest, sex, and pregnancies and put in more of the violence. But parents don't really want their kids seeing the violence either, the sex is less upsetting. Disney however made the stories about the Princes. At least with the Grimm's versions the princesses are not passive, the choose their fate, they are clever and they don't just sit there and look pretty. Also, there are lessons for kids and adults!
My next topic is the portrayal of mothers/women in Disney movies. Why is it that women always play the role of villains or are evil in these films. Also, where are their mothers?! There is only one princess with both her parents living. Fathers are glorified although even if they aren't killed off in the movie, they aren't around either. The motherly figures that Disney gives their characters are evil step mothers. So girls can't have their moms and if they get a new mom she is going to be mean and treat you badly. What the heck?! This doesn't just happen in princess movies. Bambi loses its mother too. The fathers in these films are kings even kings of the forest. I've seen the eliminating of mother/daughter relationships in these films be called matricide.
Really there are so many blogs, articles, and information out there about princess culture. I can't even begin to read them all but I find this topic so interesting.
