I love Superheroes. When I was younger, both my brother and I used to literally pray that if there was a scientific experiment to make us "super", that it would happen. We were desperate for any way to become a super hero. I wanted powers like the X-Men, and used to dream of flying over houses to save the world.
I also love Disney. Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan were a few of my most favorite movies ever! Now, some people would say that I have NOT turned out normal, but in my opinion, I'm just as "normal" as everyone else.
So, it's hard for me to sit through our class discussions and realize that people complain and have an issue with this "role models" that young kids, both male and female, have while they are growing up. I mean, to me, can't we just enjoy the Disney fairytales? Can't we let our kids just enjoy what they want to? I feel like everyone these days wants to blame everything on something! Whether it's an overactive child, or someone who likes to be neat, we have to give them medication for ADHD or OCD. I feel like these Princess Culture complaints and Super Hero Culture complaints are just researchers overreactions to why adults act out when they are older.
I have a niece and she truly loves to act like a Princess, yet her parents (my brother and sister-in-law) have helped her realize when the play time is over and when she is no longer a Princess. And, as for me, I still am a sucker for Super Heroes. I will fall for any Super Hero movie or story line. I find it inspiring and a fun way to escape.
So, I vote we not overreact. I vote we let our children enjoy what they want, and if we'd like to make a change, then do it, but when you're a parent. Draw the line, and help them learn the right way to be a Princess, and the right way to be a Super Hero.
