Sports impacting my life

Being a division one athlete, I think sports do have an influence on our culture. I thought it was interesting in the video, “Not Just a Game”, how sports have a huge impact on masculinity and femininity. To be a male sports icon, they have to be manly and would be exceptionally difficult if they were homosexuals. Conversely, women sports figures are typically stereotyped to be gay. There are many female athletes that I know are gay and they have the courage and bravery to be honest about their sexual orientation. With being the on the field hockey team, our team never judges girls that are gay because it shouldn’t make a difference on who they are attracted to. If a male athlete is gay, they typically come out after they retire or finish the sport that they are participating in. It is sad to see that males would be judged if they showed their true identity.

In my mind, I do relate sports to a battlefield. When my team and I walk onto the field to compete against our competitors, we want to figuratively “kill” them into the ground. We want to be the better team and come out with a victory, just like any sports team does. We are fighting for each other and if that means diving to the ground, we will. Even though sports and the military are not identical, we both train hard every single day, which will contribute to a victorious “battle.”
