I found today's class discussion very thought provoking, so much so that I went home and watched Disney’s Tangled. And regardless of the negative underlying messages it send to young girls…I can’t help but love it. Ahh the dangers of Disney. Dr.McCauliff today however stirred up important conversation about this topic. Is ‘princess culture’ just solely caused by the types of media these young girls are exposed too? Or is it a mix of outside factors; over indulgent parents, marketing, and easy to obtain credit? After a rousing class discussion we decided it was a mix of all of these factors, and then Dr.McCauliff brought up an interesting question; could the way we talk to little girls, as they are growing up play into ‘princess culture’? Well after finding this article by Lisa Bloom in the Huffington Post, I defiantly say yes. She states in the article how it is always our first instinct to tell little girls when we see them how pretty, cute, precious, adorable, well dressed, fantastic looking, or beautiful they are. We, as a cultural norm, use this as a cover-all to introduce ourselves to, and communicate with little girls. Maybe if we change the conversation, we can change the culture. Like Lisa Bloom does in this article.
